When they go on before you
When they go on before you, you’ll miss them a little everyday.
But some days you’ll miss them a little bit more.
You’ll think of them sometimes once, sometimes more times than you can count.
You’ll be reminded of their smirky grin. The way your name sounded when they'd say it.
You'll remember how your side would hurt from laughing so hard, about nothing and absolutely everything.
You’ll remember what it felt like seeing their boots by the back door knowing they would be inside.
You’ll wonder what it would be like if they were there on the other end of the phone for no reason other than to say “Hey, how's it goin?”
You’ll think of them and try to remember all the good days but something will always lead you to that last.
You'll regret missing that last phone call from them the day they died.
You'll remember the last hug they gave you. You'll savor the way their hoodie smelled just like them. He always felt like home.
When they go on before you, you’ll miss them a little everyday. Some days you'll wonder how you're surviving it.
But somedays you’ll miss them a little bit more.
You’ll cry on the days you miss them a little more.
You’ll look for a glimpse of them everywhere you go. I usually find him in the colors of each sunset and carefully tucked away in the lyrics of every song.
You’ll try that old phone number hoping it might just be one big mistake and they somehow answer.
You’ll look over at the empty seat hoping that if you stare at it enough they’ll be there.
You’ll say a few extra prayers and hope they hear them.
You’ll talk to them often and sit in silence hoping for a response.
You’ll wear their favorite shirt, and be disappointed that it no longer smells like them.
You’ll pray so hard that you could have them back just long enough to hug them And tell them how hard it's been since they had to leave.
Because when they go on before you, you’ll miss them a little everyday.
But somedays you’ll miss them a little bit more.
